چکیده

This paper investigates the developmental process through which L2 learners acquire two „imperfective‟ aspect markers in Korean, -ko iss(progressive and resultative) and -a iss(resultative) which attempts to identify language-general and language-specific patterns in the L2 acquisition of the Korean imperfective aspect by Japanese learners by comparing the results with previous research. Study 1 collected cross-sectional data from 55 Japanese learners of Korean as a foreign language and 18 Korean native speakers. The results show that the acquisition order was as follows: the progressive -ko iss→ the resultative -ko iss→ the resultative -a iss-. Study 2 examined the influence of instruction order by testing two groups of learners that were taught aspect markers in different orders. The results show that the order of instruction did not yield significant differences except in the rate of accuracy of the resultative marker -a issin the comprehension task.

The Effect of Instructional Order on the L2 Acquisition of the Korean Imperfective Aspect

It has been widely observed that in the L2 acquisition of aspect, progressive/imperfective marking is acquired earlier with activity verbs than with achievement verbs (the Aspect Hypothesis; Andersen & Shirai, 1994). This pattern has been seen repeatedly in Japanese -te i(e.g., Shirai & Kurono, 1998), and in -ko issand -a issin L2 Korean (e.g., Lee & Kim, 2007). However, Ishida (2004) found her...

The L2 Acquisition of the Chinese Aspect Marking

By analyzing corpus data, we have shown that the tendencies of restricting perfective past marking to Accomplishments and Achievements and imperfective marking to Statives and Activities as described by the Aspect Hypothesis (Shirai, 1991; Andersen & Shirai, 1996), undesirable in the acquisition of various languages, are desirable in the acquisition of a language like Chinese, because these ten...

Phonological Awareness Impact on Articulatory Accuracy of the Spanish Liquid [r] in Japanese FL Learners of Spanish

Foreign language learners tend to avoid phonological difficulties and simply transfer sounds whether from their L1 or any pre-existing L2. However, such methods are likely to be restricted to only passive learning methods, such as repetition, reading...
